What is the best way to help people in developing communities?

I was trying to explain the DIYNGO philosophy today to someone in the bank actually. I managed to put it quite succinctly in that the idea is to simulate activity rather be a "lynchpin". Meaning we should try to help people help themselves, a cliché no doubt but a rather sensible one.

Is this the most appropriate philosophy? I guess I assumed it was but I could be wrong...
